La Lupa ha fatto “cappotto”. I pronostici c’erano tutti anche se, nel Palio, niente è prevedibile e tutto può accadere. Come un volo e la Lupa, con la stessa determinazione, stesso cavallo e stesso fantino, ha conquistato la sua trentaseiesima vittoria.

La corsa è finita con il nerbo alzato di Jonatan Bartoletti, detto Scompiglio, alla sua quarta vittoria. L’ultima lo scorso 2 luglio e con lo stesso cavallo: Preziosa Penelope che per due volte ha vinto la sua sfida sul tufo. Siena, incredula, ha assistito a un “cappotto” (questa la definizione quando, nello stesso anno, una Contrada vince due Carriere, ndr).

Un evento eccezionale che raramente accade. Solo due volte nel Novecento, nel 1933 fu la Tartuca, l’ultima volta, con la Giraffa, nel 1997.

Tra i canapi Nicchio, Civetta, Giraffa, Aquila, Pantera, Drago, Bruco, Leocorno, Lupa, e la Tartuca di rincorsa. Dopo due partenze annullate a partire in testa il Nicchio inseguito dalla Civetta e Giraffa.

Alla prima curva di S. Martino dietro al Nicchio il Drago, la Giraffa e la Lupa, ma al primo Casato la Lupa ha rimontato posizionandosi terza, e sarà prima al terzo giro di S. Martino. Inutile ogni tentativo di rimonta del Drago.

Una corsa combattuta con il fiato sospeso. Gli occhi dei senesi puntati sulla Contrada del cuore, mentre urla di incitamento si levavano dal quel catino infuocato a forma di conchiglia. Uno spazio civico unico, perché capace di far rivivere, nel presente, la memoria storica di Siena. E’ qui che passione, forza, coraggio, sacralità e fede, si ritrovano da secoli, ogni 2 luglio e 16 agosto.

I contradaioli di Vallerozzi hanno conquistato quel premio tanto desiderato, il drappo di seta dipinto dall’artista belga Jean-Claude Coenegracht, dedicato al 70° anniversario del voto alle donne. Ma l’emozione in Piazza è continuata a salire anche subito dopo la corsa quando i contradaioli della Lupa sono arrivati con il drappellone vinto a luglio e, con i due drappi, hanno iniziato a festeggiare la vittoria riportata sul Campo.

Il sole caldo di mezz’agosto ha abbandonato il tufo, adesso a scaldare è l’euforia della vincita, per chi ha perso, invece, è già inverno. Dovranno aspettare mesi per tornare a sperare. A sperare in quello che solo i senesi sognano: un cavallo vittorioso e un pezzo di stoffa che, per loro, vale più di qualsiasi bene materiale.

Euforia pura ha invaso il Duomo. I lupaioli sono arrivati a centinaia, dentro il fruscio di seta e il rullo dei tamburi. Hanno cantato il Te Deum per ringraziare la Madonna Assunta in cielo, in onore della quale si corre questo Palio di agosto. Un tripudio di popolo in festa dove l’individualità si fonde con la collettività, perché nata e cresciuta sotto una stessa araldica. La Contrada, del resto, è segno identitario indelebile. Un senso di appartenenza e amore difficile, se non impossibile, da comprendere.

Mentre nel mondo si seguivano le Olimpiadi di Rio, a Siena, nel cuore della Toscana, l’attenzione era solo su questa corsa secolare. Unica. Incredibile. Magica. Come sempre.

The Lupa has won a “cappotto”. All the predictions were saying they would, but in the Palio nothing is predictable and everything can happen. But Lupa did it, with the same determination, same horse and same jockey, they conquered their thirty-sixth victory.

The race ended with the raised nerve of Jonatan Bartoletti, known as Scompiglio, at his fourth victory. The last one last July 2nd and with the same horse: Preziosa Penelope who twice won on the tufo. Siena, incredulous, witnessed a “cappotto” (this is the definition when, in the same year, a Contrada wins two Palios). An exceptional event that rarely happens. Only twice in the twentieth century, in 1933 it was Tartuca, the last time, with Giraffa, in 1997.

Among the ropes Nicchio, Civetta, Giraffa, Aquila, Pantera, Drago, Bruco, Leocorno, Lupa, and Tartuca as rincorsa. After two cancelled starts, Nicchio took the lead, followed by Civetta and Giraffa.

At the first bend of S. Martino behind Nicchio we see Drago, Giraffa and Lupa, but at the first Casato Lupa recovered, positioning itself third, and will be first on the third lap of S. Martino. Every attempt by the Drago to come back was useless.

A race fought with bated breath. The eyes of the Sienese were fixed on the Contrada of the heart, while shouts of encouragement rose from that fiery shell-shaped basin. A unique civic space, because it is capable of reviving, in the present, the historical memory of Siena. It is here that passion, strength, courage, sacredness and faith have been meeting for centuries, every July 2nd and August 16th.

The contradaioli of Vallerozzi have won that much desired prize, the silk banner painted by the Belgian artist Jean-Claude Coenegracht, dedicated to the 70th anniversary of women’s suffrage. But the emotion in the square continued to rise even immediately after the race when the contradaioli of Lupa arrived with the banner won in July and, with the two banners, began to celebrate the victory on the Piazza de Campo.

The hot sun of mid-August has abandoned the tuff, now it is the euphoria of victory that warms, for those who have lost, however, it is already winter. They will have to wait months to hope again. To hope for what only the Sienese dream of: a victorious horse and a piece of cloth that, for them, is worth more than any material possession.

Pure euphoria has invaded the Duomo. The wolf hunters arrived in their hundreds, amid the rustling of silk and the roll of drums. They sang the Te Deum to thank the Madonna Assunta in heaven, in whose honor this August Palio is run. A jubilation of people in celebration where individuality merges with the community, because it was born and raised under the same heraldry. The Contrada, after all, is an indelible sign of identity. A sense of belonging and love that is difficult, if not impossible, to understand.

While the world was following the Rio Olympics, in Siena, in the heart of Tuscany, attention was only on this centuries-old race. Unique. Incredible. Magical. As always.

Lupa won een historische Cappotto, met hetzelfde paard én ruiter in hetzelfde jaar. Dit was van 1933 geleden, toen won Tartuca met Ganascia op Folco.

SIENA – De Contrada della Lupa won de Palio van 16 augustus 2016 ter ere van Onze Lieve Vrouw Hemelvaart. De palio werd geschilderd door de Belg Jean-Claude Belgische Coenegracht ter ere van 70-jaar stemrecht voor vrouwen in Italië.

De wijken werden in volgende volgorde binnengeroepen : Nicchio, Civetta, Giraffa, Aquila, Pantera, Drago, Bruco, Leocorno, Lupa en Tartuca als tiende die de start bepaalde.

Met Aquila en Pantera naast elkaar beloofde het niet makkelijk te worden voor mossiere Magni. Na enkele minuten kwam Tartuca al binnen maar de start werd niet gevalideerd. Pantera zocht Aquila nadrukkelijk op waardoor de situatie moeilijker werd met de minuut.  Pas bij de derde poging werd de start, desondanks het niet in positie staan van alle wijken, toch gevalideerd. Trecciolino (Tartuca) trachtte gebruik te maken van de moeilijke situatie tussen de touwen.

Nicchio, Drago, Giraffa en Lupa langs de buitenkant vertrekken het best. Bij de eerste doortocht aan de start neemt Drago de leiding over. Ook Lupa gaat Nicchio voorbij. In de tweede San Martino komt Nicchio ten val. Drago, gevolgd door Lupa blijven aan kop. In de achtergrond zien we Aquila remonteren.

In de derde en laatste rond onderneemt Scompiglio een alles of niets. Net voorbij de Fonte Gaia passeert hij Drago via de binnenkant. Een ongezien maneuver waar ook Brio geen antwoord op heeft. Preziosa Penelope spurt naar de eindstreep en wint voor de tweede keer dit jaar. Achter haar komen ook Drago, Nicchio en Aquila over de meet.

Voor Lupa kan de mooiste winter ooit beginnen!
