Dopo quattordici anni si torna a correre un Palio straordinario e Il Pesse ritorna protagonista, conquistando la sua nona vittoria raggiunge il grande Ciancone e pone fine ad un periodo decisamente negativo.

La tratta è abbastanza ricca di soggetti che fanno ben sperare, ci sono i vincitori di luglio ed agosto, Gangelies e Venus VIII, l’eterna Votta Votta e Urban II che sono gli unici barberi sempre presenti nelle tre carriere del 2000. Ormai non sorprende più l’esclusione di Giove e l’annunciato e mancato ritorno del grande Quarnero.

Votta Votta, al suo undicesimo Palio, tocca al Montone in cui arriva Trecciolino, per la prima volta col giubbetto della sua Contrada.

Venus VIII arriva per la terza volta consecutiva nella stalla del Leocorno che punta al cappotto montando Massimino, di nuovo in Pantaneto dopo tredici anni. Gangelies fa esultare la Lupa che punta alla vittoria con lo stesso cavallo che ha vinto per la rivale Istrice nel luglio precedente, fra le due Contrade esiste già un precedente analogo risalente al 1935, quando Ruello vinse per le due avversarie. Urban II è il grande favorito nella Selva, col Pesse a caccia di rivincite. Si parla bene anche di Ei Caramella e Digazert, due purosangue debuttanti toccati a Bruco e Torre, al terzo Palio consecutivo corso con un barbero esordiente.

Nelle prove l’unico cambio di monta importante avviene nella Civetta, Bighino viene preferito a Clemente che resta a piedi dopo nove Palii corsi consecutivamente dal debutto.

Cianchino torna nella Tartuca dopo nove anni, firmando la sua quarantunesima presenza, record per un fantino in attività.

Nelle prove, il cavallo dell’Aquila da molti problemi rifiutando sistematicamente l’allineamento al canape, anche Gangelies e Digazert si dimostrano molto nervosi. La mossa presenta più di qualche difficoltà, Ambasciatore è nervosissimo, anche Ei Caramella mette in difficoltà il Bufera.

Bighino, di rincorsa, attende a lungo il momento propizio, Trecciolino lo cerca invitandolo più volte ad entrare.

Appena la Civetta entra si delinea subito il duello decisivo di questa Carriera, Il Pesse contro la Torre. Il rientrante Pinturicchio parte alla grande, Il Pesse non è da meno e i due procedono appaiati per i primi metri.

Al primo San Martino la Selva prende la testa, Pinturicchio gira largo, pauroso volo del Montone, la corsa di Trecciolino finisce col disperato tentativo di aggrapparsi ai materassi.

La caduta del Montone coinvolge anche il Bruco e rallenta la Tartuca. Il Pesse conta sulla superiorità di Urban II e pennella ogni curva, Pinturicchio invece ha molte difficoltà per far girare il vivace Digazert.

Nonostante tutto la Torre sembra in grado di insidiare la Selva fino all’ultimo, dietro le due battistrada lottano senza molta convinzione Lupa, Drago e Leocorno. Per il resto della Carriera Il Pesse controlla la Torre, la Selva torna alla vittoria dopo tredici anni di delusioni, terzo successo per Capitan Marini dopo quelli del 1978 e del 1980.

Da segnalare infine il rinnovo dei costumi, atteso per diciannove anni.

After fourteen years, the Palio Straordinario is back and Il Pesse returns as a protagonist, winning his ninth Palio, reaching the great Ciancone and putting an end to a decidedly negative period.

The tratta is quite rich in subjects that give hope, there are the winners of July and August, Gangelies and Venus VIII, the eternal Votta Votta and Urban II who are the only horses always present in the three careers of 2000. The exclusion of Giove and the announced and failed return of the great Quarnero are no longer surprising.

Votta Votta, at his eleventh Palio, goes to Montone in which Trecciolino arrives, for the first time with the jacket of his Contrada.

Venus VIII arrives for the third consecutive time in Leocorno stable who aims for the coat riding Massimino, again in Pantaneto after thirteen years. Gangelies makes Lupa exult, aiming for victory with the same horse that won for rival Istrice the previous July; there is already a similar precedent between the two Contrade dating back to 1935, when Ruello won for the two opponents. Urban II is the big favorite in Selva, with Pesse looking for revenge. Ei Caramella and Digazert are also spoken well of, two debuting thoroughbreds touched by Bruco and Torre, at their third consecutive Palio run with a debuting Barbero.

In the trials, the only important change of mount occurs in Civetta, Bighino is preferred to Clemente who remains on foot after nine consecutive Palios run since his debut.

Cianchino returns to Tartuca after nine years, signing his forty-first presence, a record for an active jockey.

In the trials, Aquila’s horse causes many problems, systematically refusing to align with the starting line, Gangelies and Digazert also prove to be very nervous. The move presents more than a few difficulties, Ambasciatore is very nervous, even Ei Caramella puts Bufera in difficulty.

Bighino, chasing, waits for a long time for the right moment, Trecciolino looks for him inviting him several times to enter.

As soon as Civetta enters, the decisive duel of this Carriera immediately emerges, Il Pesse against Torre. The returning Pinturicchio starts off great, Il Pesse is no less and the two proceed side by side for the first few meters.

At the first San Martino Selva takes the lead, Pinturicchio turns wide, fearful flight of Montone, Trecciolino’s run ends with the desperate attempt to cling to the mattresses.

The fall of Montone also involves Bruco and slows down Tartuca. Pesse counts on the superiority of Urban II and paints every curve, Pinturicchio instead has many difficulties in making the lively Digazert turn.

Despite everything, Torre seems able to threaten Selva until the end, behind the two leaders Lupa, Drago and Leocorno fight without much conviction. For the rest of the Career Pesse controls Torre, Selva returns to victory after thirteen years of disappointments, third success for Captain Marini after those of 1978 and 1980.

Finally, it is worth mentioning the renewal of the costumes, awaited for nineteen years.

Het was 14 jaar geleden dat er nog een Straordinario gereden werd. Net als toen is het Il Pesse die aan het langste eind trekt. Hij wint zijn negende palio en komt op gelijke hoogte met de grote Ciancone. Hij maakt ook een einde aan een negatieve periode (vorige overwinning : de cappotto van 1997)

De 10 kapiteins kiezen voor de 2 winnaars van de vorige koersen van 2000 : Gangelies en Venus VIII. Daarnaast ook Votta Votta en Urban II die als enige de 3 koersen van 2000 zullen rijden. Giove wordt weer uitgesloten en Quarnero die na 3 jaar opnieuw opduikt bij de tratta wordt niet gekozen.

Votta Votta gaat bij zijn negende deelname naar Montone, waar Trecciolino voor het eerste in het roze zal rijden.

Venus VIII arriveert voor de derde achtereenvolgende keer in de stal van de Leocorno. Zij kiezen voor Massimino, die na 13 jaar opnieuw voor hen zal rijden. Gangelies laat Lupa juichen voor het paard dat in juli voor rivaal Istrice won. Ze hopen op een herhaling van 1935 toen Ruello voor beide rivalen won in 1 jaar. Urban II is de grote favoriet bij Selva, met Il Pesse op jacht naar wraak. Er wordt in Siena ook veel goed gezegd over Ei Caramella en Digazert, twee debutanten die voor Bruco en Torre uitkomen.

In de prove merken we slechts 1 verandering van fantino op : Bighino krijgt de voorkeur op Clemente, die na 9 opeenvolgende palio’s geen paard vindt.

Cianchino keert na negen jaar terug naar Tartuca, zijn eenenveertigste deelname, een record voor een actieve jockey.

Tijdens de prove merken we wel wat problemen bij de paarden. Ambasciatore, het paard van Aquila zorgt voor veel problemen. Het wil niet tegen de koord gaan staan.

De dag van de koers zelf is Ambasciatore erg nerveus. Ook Gangelies en Digazert blijken erg zenuwachtig. Ei Caramella op haar beurt maakt het Il Bufera erg moeilijk.

Bighino, die de start geeft voor Civetta wacht lange tijd op een gunstig moment. Rivaal Leocorno heeft immers goede papieren. Trecciolino op zijn beurt probeert Civetta verschillende keren uit te nodigen om de start te ‘krijgen’.

Zodra Civetta binnenkomt wordt het beslissende duel van deze koers, Il Pesse tegen Torre  meteen geschetst. De heroptredende Pinturicchio start goed. Ook Il Pesse is goed weg. Ze rijden zij aan zij richting San Martino.

In de eerste San Martino neemt Selva de kop, Pinturicchio draait te breed. Montone komt als een razende de bocht in. Trecciolino’s race eindigt met een wanhopige poging om zich aan de matrassen te hechten.

Montone sleurt Bruco mee in de val en vertraagt op die manier Tartuca. Il Pesse rekent op de superioriteit van Urban II en draait elke bocht perfect. Pinturicchio heeft veel moeite om volbloed Digazert te laten draaien.

Ondanks alles blijft Torre Selva tot het einde opjagen. Op een afstand volgen Lupa, Drago en Leocorno. Selva controleert de koers en Selva wint na 13 jaren van teleurstelling opnieuw de Palio. Het is het derde succes voor Kapitein Marini (na 1978 en 1980)

Ook te vermelden zijn de nieuwe kostuums van de Corteo Storico, die het laatste vernieuwd werden in 1981.
