Ancora assente Giove i cavalli più ambiti sono i “soliti” Votta Votta e Re Artù, outsider Venus VIII e Urban II, poi sei esordienti sconosciuti.

Votta Votta torna nel Bruco che conferma la fiducia al Pesse, Re Artù ritorna per la terza volta nella stalla della Pantera.

Proprio la Contrada di Stalloreggi vivacizza le prove, dando vita ad un valzer di monte che vede protagoniste anche Selva, Giraffa e Oca.

Re Artù viene montato egregiamente sia da Gregory Baldicchi che da Bighino, ma nella Pantera serve una monta prestigiosa e arriva Cianchino che lascia la Selva all’improvviso.

In Vallepiatta si rimedia prima con Tredici e poi con Veleno che arriva al Palio per montare la “sua” Velenosa.

L’Oca sembra orientata a confermare Mamassino, girando Trecciolino alla Giraffa, ma all’ultimo momento Bruschelli preferisce tornare in Fontebranda e in Provenzano viene concessa fiducia al giovanissimo Dino Pes detto “Velluto”.

Ma dopo la Prova Generale qualcosa cambia, una colica mette KO Zullina, l’Oca è costretta a rinunciare al Palio e Trecciolino resta a piedi.

Anche nell’Onda succede qualcosa di strano nella serata di vigilia, l’intera stalla viene “sfiduciata”, Urban II viene dato in pessime condizioni e la tensione in Malborghetto è altissima.

La mossa del Palio non ha tempi lunghi, Massimino nella Torre cerca l’accordo con Scintilla di rincorsa, ma il modesto Asabinchere è irrequieto e infastidisce notevolmente il Bruco.

Verso lo steccato sono molto tranquille Leocorno, Tartuca e Onda e proprio queste Contrade prendono la testa.

Bruco e Torre partono malissimo, Asabinchere si strappa dopo pochi metri, si corre praticamente in otto.

Al primo San Martino Onda e Tartuca girano molto larghe e finiscono ai materassi, Clemente cade, Bufera resta in groppa a Mafalda ma per lui il Palio è compromesso. Il Leocorno prende il comando tallonato dallo scosso dell’Onda e dalla Lupa in grande rimonta, ma al primo Casato l’azione di Scintilla si infrange nel colonnino.

Dè spinge con sicurezza Venus VIII, il Bruco recupera posizioni, mentre al secondo San Martino cadono Selva e Pantera, con Cianchino decisamente sotto tono. Per il Leocorno è praticamente fatta, Dè ha un piccola esitazione all’ultimo San Martino, ma Urban II non riesce a colmare il distacco, Il Pesse cade all’ultimo Casato.

Per la Contrada di Pantaneto arriva la quinta vittoria in soli vent’anni, conquistata con un binomio poco considerato alla vigilia dimostratosi nettamente superiore sul tufo.

Giove is still absent, the most sought-after horses are the “usual” Votta Votta and Re Artù, outsiders Venus VIII and Urban II, then six unknown debutants.

Votta Votta returns to Bruco which confirms its trust in Pesse, Re Artù returns for the third time to Pantera stable.

The Contrada of Stalloreggi enlivens the trials, giving life to a mount waltz that also features Selva, Giraffa and Oca.

Re Artù is ridden excellently by both Gregory Baldicchi and Bighino, but in Pantera a prestigious mount is needed and Cianchino arrives who leaves Selva suddenly.

In Vallepiatta the solution is first with Tredici and then with Veleno who arrives at the Palio to ride “his” Velenosa.

Oca seems oriented to confirm Mamassino, turning Trecciolino to Giraffa, but at the last moment Bruschelli prefers to return to Fontebranda and in Provenzano trust is given to the very young Dino Pes called “Velluto”.

But after the Prova Generale something changes, a colic knocks out Zullina, Oca is forced to give up the Palio and Trecciolino is left on foot.

Even in Onda something strange happens on the evening before the race, the entire stable is “distrusted”, Urban II is given in terrible conditions and the tension in Malborghetto is very high.

The move of the Palio does not have long times, Massimino in Torre seeks an agreement with Scintilla (rincorsa), but the modest Asabinchere is restless and greatly annoys Bruco.

Towards the fence Leocorno, Tartuca and Onda are very calm and these Contrade take the lead.

Bruco and Torre start badly, Asabinchere breaks away after a few meters, practically eight of them are running.

At the first San Martino Onda and Tartuca turn very wide and end up on the mattresses, Clemente falls, Bufera stays on Mafalda’s back but for him the Palio is compromised. Leocorno takes the lead followed by the shaken Onda and the Lupa in a great comeback, but at the first Casato Scintilla’s action is shattered in the column.

Dè confidently pushes Venus VIII, Bruco recovers positions, while at the second San Martino Selva and Pantera fall, with Cianchino decidedly under par. For Leocorno it is practically done, Dè has a little hesitation at the last San Martino, but Urban II is unable to close the gap, Il Pesse falls at the last Casato.

For the Contrada di Pantaneto comes the fifth victory in just twenty years, conquered with a pairing that was little considered on the eve and proved to be clearly superior on the tuff.

Giove, winnaar van de palio van 2 juli 1999 is weer afwezig. Votta Votta en Re Artu zijn favoriet, Venus VIII en Urban II zijn de 2 outsiders. Zij worden aangevuld met 6 debutanten.

Votta Votta keert terug naar Bruco dat opnieuw voor Il Pesse kiest. Re Artu gaat voor de derde keer naar de stal van Pantera.

De Contrada di Stalloreggi geeft leven aan de prove en verandert 3x van fantino. Tussen de derde en vierde prova halen ze Cianchino weg bij Selva. Selva moet dus een andere fantino installeren. Net op de moment dat Oca voor Mamassino lijkt te gaan verandert Trecciolino van gedacht en verlaat hij Giraffa voor Oca. Het paard van Oca blesseert zich waardoor de niet deelnemen aan de Palio. Bijgevolg heeft ook Trecciolino geen monta.

Ook in Onda gebeuren rare dingen. Urban II is in slechte conditie en de wijk is ontmoedigd.

De mossa duurt niet lang. Massimino bij Torre zoekt een overeenkomst met Scintilla bij Lupa die de start moet geven. De bescheiden Asabinchere is rusteloos en ergert Bruco aanzienlijk.

Leocorno, Tartuca en Onda zijn zeer rustig en nemen de kop. Bruco en Torre beginnen erg slecht, Asabinchere verstapt zich na enkele meters waardoor ze eigenlijk nog maar met 8 zullen koersen.

In de eerste San Martino draaien Onda en Tartuca heel breed en eindigen in de matrassen, Clemente valt, Bufera blijft op de rug van Mafalda maar de koers lijkt over voor hem. Leocorno neemt het commando over van de scosso van Onda. Lupa lijkt een comeback te maken maar botst tegen de paal in de Casato.

Dè berijdt Venus VIII met vertrouwen, Bruco wint enkele posities, terwijl in de tweede San Martino Selva en Pantera vallen. Voor Leocorno is het binnen.
