The Contrada della Tartuca with Andrea Coghe called Tempesta on Remorex scosso won the Palio Straordinario of October 20, 2018 dedicated to the Centenary of the First World War, thus winning the Drappellone created by the Turin artist Gian Marco Montesano.

The race was preceded by the performance of the Carabinieri on horseback, the Bersaglieri Fanfare and the Historical Procession.

With the following order of calling between the ropes: Chiocciola, Giraffa, Selva, Lupa, Torre, Tartuca, Civetta, Drago, Nicchio and Oca di rincorsa; the starter Fabio Magni makes the horses come out of the ropes for once to calm them down (as is now customary) thus also giving the jockeys time to talk to the chase and make agreements between themselves (the so-called partiti).

At the second alignment a lot of confusion between the ropes with the horses out of position and again the starter makes the Contrade come out.

Third alignment with alignment problems for Civetta and Nicchio while Oca does not enter due to the excellent position of Torre at the rope. The starter thus makes the horses come out of the ropes again with Tittia (Nicchio) who continues to talk to Gingillo (Oca) in pursuit.

Fourth alignment: with Nicchio that tries to continually gain positions trying to place itself next to Torre (Tittia’s tactic is clear, as he wants to go down towards the center alongside Torre, and Gingillo who waits for Nicchio to put Torre in difficulty) Oca enters but Magni cancels the move due to some horses out of place.

At the fifth alignment, after about forty minutes from the exit of the horses from the entrance, another move invalidated due to a forcing of Nicchio.

At the sixth attempt Oca finally enters, a valid move, and an excellent start from Chiocciola, Giraffa, Selva and Lupa. Chiocciola first at San Martino followed by Giraffa, Selva and Civetta, while the jockeys of Lupa, Oca and Torre fall. Chiocciola continues in the lead ahead of Giraffa and Civetta, with Civetta passing first at the flag but crashing into the mattresses remaining standing at the second San Martino. Tartuca thus takes the lead and then the jockey and horse of Giraffa, and the jockeys of Chiocciola and Tartuca itself fall at Casato. The jockey of Drago also falls at the third San Martino. Only Tittia remains in the saddle in front in Nicchio but Tartuca goes on to win with Remorex shaken right in front of Nicchio.

De Contrada della Tartuca won met Andrea Coghe detto Tempesta en Remorex de Palio Straordinario van 20 oktober 2018. De palio was ter ere van de 100ste verjaardag van de Eerste Wereldoorlog. De drappellone was geschilderd door Gian Marco Montesano.

Zoals steeds werd de koers voorafgegaan door de Carabinieri te paard en de Corteo Storico. Deze keer waren ook de Bersaglieri van de partij.

De contrade werden als volgt tussen de touwen geroepen : Chiocciola, Giraffa, Selva, Lupa, Torre, Tartuca, Civetta, Drago, Nicchio en Oca die de start moesten geven. Mossiere Fabio Magni laat de paarden een eerste keer buiten gaan om te kalmeren en om akkoorden te maken met de 10e.

Ook bij een tweede uitlijning veel verwarring bij de paarden tussen plaats 6 en 9. Wederom moeten de paarden even naar buiten.

Bij de derde uitlijning zien we problemen bij Civetta en Nicchio. Oca komt niet omdat Torre perfect gepositioneerd staat. Nogmaals stuurt de mossiere iedereen naar buiten. Tittia (Nicchio) zoekt nogmaals Gingillo (Oca) in de hoop een akkoord te maken.

Vierde uitlijning: Nicchio gaat uit positie en positioneert zich voortdurend naast Torre. Met deze taktiek wil Tittia de rustige Tonina (Torre) destabiliseren zodat Oca binnenkomt. Dat gebeurt ook maar Magni geeft een valse start wanneer Oca binnenkomt.

Een nieuwe en dus vijfde uitlijning volgt, ongeveer 40 minuten nadat de paarden op de piazza gekomen zijn. Wederom zien we een valse start na forceren van Nicchio.

Bij een zesde poging zien we wel een “mossa valida”. Chiocciola, Giraffa, Selva en Lupa zijn het beste weg. Chiocciola draait eerst in de San Martino, gevolgd door Giraffa, Selva en Civetta. Achterin vallen Lupa, Torre en Oca. Chiocciola behoudt de kop voor Giraffa en de opkomende Civetta. Ter hoogte van de Bandierino komt Civetta op kop maar ze crashen in de matrassen van San Martino. Tartuca komt nu op kop maar ook zij komen ten val in de Casato. Het paard van Giraffa struikelt en neemt Chiocciola mee in zijn val. Ook Nicchio valt bijna. De scosso van Tartuca loopt op kop, al lijkt het paard zijn oriëntatie verloren te hebben. Het paard draait als eerste in de laatste San Martino, gevolgd door de scosso van Chiocciola en Tittia bij Nicchio. Achterin zien we Drago vallen. Nicchio passeert Chiocciola maar komt te kort aan de meet. Tartuca wint met Remorex voor Nicchio.

Een wist-je-datje : Tartuca won in het verleden 1 straordinario; die van 4 juni 1809. Deze werd gereden met alle 17 contrade met Cavalli scossi, net zoals Remorex, de held van 2018!
