Mossa velocissima, prima a partire è la Giraffa, seguita dal Valdimontone e dalla Lupa.

Alla prima curva di San Martino è sempre la Contrada di Provenzano a condurre in testa, seguita dal Bruco e dalla Torre.

Il Bruco passa all’interno raggiungendo la prima curva del Casato, dove la Torre supera la Giraffa.

Dietro cadono Oca e Onda. Il Bruco continua la sua corsa fino al secondo S. Martino, inseguito dalla Giraffa che sorpassa la Torre.

Stesso ordine al Casato. Ma il Palio si giocherà tutto all’ultimo S. Martino, quando la Giraffa, dall’interno, prende il comando, ma Alberto Ricceri, detto Salasso, non riesce a tenere la monta. Cade, portandosi dietro anche il fantino del Bruco, Dino Pes detto Velluto.

Il cavallo scosso riesce, comunque, a guadagnare la prima posizione, inseguito da quello della Giraffa. Seguono Drago e Pantera.

All’ultima curva del Casato il cavallo della Giraffa sorpassa quello del Bruco, rallentato nella corsa dal barbero dell’Oca.

L’arrivo è da cardiopalma con due cavalli scossi, quasi allineati al bandierino. Dalla Piazza c’è un attimo di smarrimento generale: i monturati della Pantera credono di aver vinto. Scendono dal palco delle comparse.

Il Cencio non viene consegnato immediatamente ed è suspance, mentre tutti chiedono il nome del vincitore. La conferma viene dai Giudici della vincita e, finalmente, arriva nelle mani dei Giraffini esultanti. La corsa verso la vittoria di Donosu Tou è finita. Adesso è giubilo.

Il drappellone patchwork, realizzato da Emanuele Luzzati, che aveva fatto sognare per quattro giorni la città, è già nella Chiesa di Provenzano. Come un segno del destino nella stessa chiesa della Contrada vittoriosa. La festa è già iniziata. I giraffini festeggiano e festeggeranno per giorni e giorni, perché quest’emozione di un attimo, ha il potere di ripetersi, dilatando il tempo.

Adesso che la magica conchiglia di Piazza del Campo si è svuotata e la luce del sole è calata, tingendo di rosso i palazzi, per la città inizia l’attesa per la Carriera del 16 agosto.

The Cencio is not delivered immediately and there is suspense, while everyone asks the name of the winner. The confirmation comes from the Judges of the victory and, finally, arrives in the hands of the exultant Giraffini. Donosu Tou’s race towards victory is over. Now it is jubilation.

The patchwork banner, made by Emanuele Luzzati, who had made the city dream for four days, is already in the Church of Provenzano. Like a sign of destiny in the same church of the victorious Contrada. The party has already begun. The Giraffini celebrate and will celebrate for days and days, because this emotion of a moment has the power to repeat itself, dilating time.

Now that the magical shell of Piazza del Campo has emptied and the sunlight has set, painting the buildings red, the city begins to wait for the Carriera on August 16.

The game of the ten barberi who challenge each other for a silk cloth will give life, once again, to the great Festival that Siena manages to revive, every year, with the same enthusiasm, the same passion and, above all, with the same love. De 10 wijken worden door de nieuwe mossiere (Ambrosione) in volgende volgorde binnengeroepen : Lupa, Bruco, Giraffa, Pantera (die als enige een ex-winnaar hebben geloot : Zodiach), Valdimontone, Onda, Drago, Oca, Torre en Selva.

Giraffa is al eerste weg, gevolgd door Valdimontone, Pantera en Lupa. Bruco probeert langs onder terrein goed te maken. Dit loont want in de eerste San Martino zijn ze tweede na Giraffa. Torre, Montone en Lupa volgen. Drago en Pantera draaien te breed..

Nog voor de eerste Casato gaat Bruco over Giraffa. Ook Torre doet dit terwijl rivalen Oca en Onda in de achtergrond vallen. In de tweede San Martino draait Torre veel te breed. De Palio zal beslecht worden tussen Bruco en Giraffa.

Bij het ingaan van de derde ronde loopt Bruco op kop, gevolgd door Giraffa. Salasso beseft dat hij iets zal moeten doen om alsnog te kunnen winnen. Hij beslist om de San Martino zeer kort te nemen. In zijn val sleurt hij Bruco mee. De twee scossi zullen onderling moeten uitmaken wie er zal winnen. Bruco blijft echter een kop en lijkt te gaan winnen.

In de laatste Casato komt echter het paard van Oca in tegengestelde richting uit de bocht gelopen. Vai Go van Bruco moet uitwijken, terwijl Donosu Tou kan doorlopen en dus de kop kan nemen.

Drie jaar na Leocorno in 2001 wint er weer een scosso op de Piazza! Zowel voor Donosu Tou als voor Salasso is het de eerste overwinning. Voor Giraffa is het 7 jaar wachten geweest na de Capotto van 1997.
