Quando ormai si pensava che la corsa sarebbe stata rinviata a domani, erano le 20.10 passate, ecco che la Civetta entra e il canape si abbassa. Si avvantaggiano subito Bruco e Giraffa seguite più indietro da Lupa e Nicchio.

La Giraffa allunga sul Bruco mentre dietro Nicchio e Aquila si contendono la terza posizione andando a finire sui palchi al primo Casato e lasciando via libera alla Civetta che sta rinvenendo forte.

Comincia il secondo giro con la Giraffa ancora in testa al secondo San Martino, ma il Bruco e la Civetta si fanno sempre più sotto.

Nella dirittura, dopo la Cappella, Trecciolino attacca e passa dall’interno il Pesse senza problemi, uscendo per primo dal secondo Casato.

A questo punto si decide la corsa: anche la Civetta prova a passare la Giraffa dall’interno, quando sono entrambe sulla curva, ma Gingillo stringe troppo, va a picchiare sul colonnino e sbilanciandosi alza la Giraffa sui palchi.

La corsa della Giraffa finisce lì, la Civetta perde terreno prezioso e il Bruco prende quel vantaggio che amministrerà per tutto il terzo giro.

Alla fine la Civetta resterà soltanto seconda davanti alla Lupa. Trecciolino invece, avrà solo il problema di “dribblare” il popolo brucaiolo che ha già invaso la pista per abbracciare i suoi due eroi, sette anni dopo l’ultimo trionfo.

When it was thought that the race would be postponed until tomorrow, it was past 8.10 pm, Civetta enters and the rope is lowered. Bruco and Giraffa immediately take advantage, followed further back by Lupa and Nicchio.

Giraffa extends its lead over Bruco while behind Nicchio and Aquila compete for third place, ending up on the stages at the first Casato and leaving the way open for Civetta who is recovering strongly.

The second lap begins with Giraffa still in the lead at the second San Martino, but Bruco and Civetta are getting closer and closer.

In the straight, after the Cappella, Trecciolino attacks and passes Pesse from the inside without problems, exiting first from the second Casato.

At this point the race is decided: Civetta also tries to pass Giraffa from the inside, when they are both on the curve, but Gingillo tightens too much, hits the column and, losing his balance, lifts Giraffa onto the stages.

Giraffa’s race ends there, Civetta loses precious ground and Bruco takes that advantage that it will manage for the entire third lap.

In the end, Civetta will only remain second in front of Lupa. Trecciolino, on the other hand, will only have the problem of “dribble” the brucaiolo people who have already invaded the track to embrace their two heroes, seven years after the last triumph.

65 minuten heeft het geduurd alvorens ze weg waren. Drie valse starten waren nodig. De mossiere, Masala riep ze als volgt binnen : Leocorno, Aquila, Nicchio, Torre, Lupa, Onda, Chiocciola, Giraffa, Bruco en Civetta. Favorieten waren : Civetta (Zodiach), Bruco (Berio) en Giraffa (Urban II).

Bruco is dan ook het snelt weg, gevolgd door Giraffa, Lupa, Chiocciola, Onda en Nicchio. Ter hoogte van Fonte Gaia laat Trecciolino Giraffa gaan. Hij kent Berio beter dan een ander en weet dat er nog heel wat afstand af te leggen is.

Giraffa neemt de leiding, gevolgd door Bruco, Nicchio, Aquila en Civetta. In de eerste Casato gaat Civetta over Nicchio en Aquila.

Het is duidelijk dat Giraffa, Bruco en Civetta het onderling zullen beslechten. Tussen tweede San Martino en Casato gaat Bruco Giraffa voorbij ter hoogte van het Palazzo Pubblicco. In de Casato probeert Civetta met een maneuver langs onder. Samen met Giraffa gaat hij tegen de balustrade. Voor Bruco ligt de weg naar de overwinning open.

De palio, geschilderd door Andrea Rauch wordt o.a. door Bernardo Corradi afgehaald. In Siena is hij een gewone Brucaiolo die in juli nog Duce was in de comparsa maar die voor de wereld bekend is als de aanvaller van Lazio Roma en de nationale ploeg van Italië.

Bruco knoopt 7 jaar na 1996, toen na 41 jaar eindelijk gewonnen werd, weer aan met een overwinning.
