Siena, 16 agosto 2014 – La Civetta vince il Palio dell’Assunta. A tagliare per primo il traguardo è stato Occolè, cavallo all’esordio, montato da Andrea Mari, detto Brio. Per il fantino è la quarta vittoria, la seconda per la Civetta nel 2009, in sella a Istriceddu. Battuta l’Aquila in testa nel primo giro e una delle favorite. Una maledizione per la contrada, che non vince in piazza del Campo dal 1992.

Alla partenza era scattato in testa il cavallo della contrada Valdimontone ma, alla prima curva di San Martino, il fantino Carlo Sanna, detto Brigante, è caduto lasciando la testa della corsa all’Aquila, seguita dalla Civetta mentre finiva a terra anche Sebastiano Murtas, detto Grandine, il fantino della Pantera. Alla seconda curva del Casato Brio è riuscito a portare Occolè, un castrone di sette anni che per la prima volta correva sul tufo di piazza del Campo, davanti al cavallo dell’Aquila, Lo Specialista. Brio ha quindi portato in fondo ai tre giri, senza grandi problemi Occolè, regalando la trentaquattresima vittoria alla Civetta, contrada con la quale lo stesso fantino aveva vinto il suo secondo Palio nell’agosto 2009, l’ultimo drappellone vinto dalla contrada prima di quello di stasera. Alla Carriera non ha partecipato la Giraffa per l’infortunio riportato dal cavallo Quietness durante la terza prova. In piazza i contradaioli con le bandiere nere e rosse, bordate di bianco, sono subito andati a farsi consegnare dalle mani del sindaco il drappellone, per poi portarlo in festa nelle strade di Siena.

Civetta wins the Palio dell’Assunta. The first to cross the finish line was Occolè, a debuting horse ridden by Andrea Mari, known as Brio. ….met een magistrale Brio op de 7 jarige debutant Occole’. Civetta wint hiermee zijn 34e Palio. Voor debutant Occole’ was het zijn eerste, Brio won zijn 4e op 22 deelnames.

SIENA – Civetta won de Palio van 16 augustus 2014, geschilderd door Ivan Dimitrov en opgedragen aan de Toscaanse poëet Mario Luzi.

Volgende volgorde werd door het lot bepaald aan de start: Valdimontone, Civetta, Drago, Leocorno, Bruco, Aquila, Pantera, Chiocciola en Selva al rincorsa.

Starter Ambrosione koos ervoor om de paarden snel buiten te sturen. Bij de tweede poging volgde snel een valse start. Bij de derde poging werd er snel gestart. Aquila, Montone en Chiocciola schoten als eerste weg. In de eerste San Martino schoof Montone weg, Aquila nam de kop, gevolgd door de langs binnen draaiende Civetta en dan Chiocciola. In de achtergrond vliegt ook Pantera tegen de matrassen. Aquila blijft leiden en kan een eerste poging van Civetta om hem te passeren onderdrukken. Na de tweede Casato is het wel zover, Civetta neemt de kop en geeft deze niet meer weg. Brio triomfeert op Occole’ en neemt vijand Leocorno, dat topfavoriet was met Oppio (winnaar juli) te grazen!
