È Torre come da pronostico, che la vedeva favorita assoluta. Ma il verdetto nel Palio non è mai scontato. Perché il Palio, prima di tutto, è un gioco. Il gioco della vita, che si può leggere ancora negli occhi dei bambini, nei loro cori “sguaiati”, nelle loro manine che agitano frementi il fazzoletto della propria Contrada; ad ogni giro, che sia Palio o che siano solo prove.

Un gioco, a volte ingenuo, a volte crudele. Crudele, come quando l’attesa per una vittoria dura per 44 anni, con le immagini in bianco e nero della corsa vittoriosa di Vittorino su Salomè de Mores. Ma anche questa attesa è finita, e il popolo di Salicotto, finalmente, assapora il dolce gusto della vittoria.

Eppure ancora una volta questa Festa senese ha dimostrato di non avere regole prescritte, ma di seguire solo quelle del destino, ma soprattutto dell’amore, che stasera ha fatto piangere di felicità bambini e vecchi, i giovani che nel 1961 avevano gioito e ora di nuovo continueranno con figli e nipoti.

Il Palio dedicato alla Madonna Assunta era già scritto alla mossa, quando Daniele Masala, campione olimpionico di Pentathlon moderno, ha chiamato l’allineamento tra i canapi.

La Lupa è scattata fulminea, inseguita dalla Selva, Torre, Onda e Montone.

Al primo giro a S. Martino la Lupa non riesce a girare e la Selva e il Montone ne approfittano, ma soprattutto la Torre, che dall’interno passa prepotentemente in testa.

Si arriva così al primo Casato con la Torre ancora prima, tallonata da Selva e Chiocciola, più staccate Onda e Montone.

Al secondo giro, al primo passaggio al bandierino, la Chiocciola supera la Selva. È l’ultimo sussulto di una carriera che da qui in avanti vedrà il monologo di Berio e Trecciolino.

Vano il tentativo dell’esordiente Virginio Zedde che, con i colori della Chiocciola e il grigio Zilata Usa, cerca fino in fondo di contendere la carriera alla Torre; e alla fine Berio e Trecciolino trionfano realizzando il loro personale cappotto ed anche la loro quarta vittoria insieme. Ma soprattutto è Torre, che con questa vittoria, la numero quarantaquattro, abbandona anche la “cuffia” che spetta alla “nonna” della piazza, ovvero la Contrada che da più tempo non vince il Palio. Nonna adesso è la Civetta, che attende il “cencio” dal 4 luglio 1979.

Ma si dovrà attendere ancora, fino a luglio prossimo, quando di nuovo la magia della Festa senese si ripeterà, sempre uguale e sempre diversa.

On the second lap, at the first passage at the flag, Chiocciola overtakes Selva. It is the last gasp of a career that from now on will see the monologue of Berio and Trecciolino.

The attempt of the debutant Virginio Zedde is in vain, who, with the colors of the Chiocciola and the gray Zilata USA, tries to the end to compete for the career of Torre; and in the end Berio and Trecciolino triumph, achieving their personal coat and also their fourth victory together. Net als in juli is het het duo Trecciolino-Berio die aan het langste eind trekken. Trecciolino zit hier al aan 10 overwinningen. Voor de op pensioen gaande Berio is het nummer 4 op 6 deelnames.

De middag van 13 augustus worden 3 wijken bedeeld met een ex-winnaar : Giraffa met Zodiach, Torre met Berio en Valdimontone met Alesandra. Het is echter zaak voor Torre om Berio te koppelen aan Trecciolino, dé fantino van gezworen vijand Oca. Wat de eerste prova niet lukt (Veleno II) lukt de ochtend van 14 augustus wel : Trecciolino in het truitje van Torre.

De starter laat de wijken als volgt binnenkomen : Chiocciola, Selva, Istrice, Giraffa, Civetta, Torre, Lupa, Onda, Valdimontone en Leocorno. Na een kwartier zijn ze al weg. Lupa en Selva zijn het best weg. Onda geeft Torre minstens 5 zweepslagen. Desondanks slaagt Trecciolino erin om Berio het juiste traject te laten lopen. Lupa draait veel te breed en Torre duikt in het gat.

Aan de kapel is Torre op kop. Debutant Lo Zedde is de enige die kan aanklampen. Trecciolino rijdt als een meester op kop en brengt de Palio na 44 jaar terug naar Salicotto.
