Fontebranda torna a invadere le strade con bandiere e tamburi dopo otto anni di attesa e lo fa nel modo più clamoroso, schiacciante e sorprendente possibile. Giovanni Atzeni detto Tittia e Fedora Saura hanno dimostrato che nel Palio di oggi le certezze non esistono. Conta il cuore, la rabbia, la forza di un popolo, la determinazione di una dirigenza affamata di rivalse.

Conta tutto ma conta soprattutto quel giovane fantino caparbio e coraggioso che non si è arreso davanti ai primi Palii andati male.

Abile interprete della cavallina Fedora Saura, messa a punto come una fuoriserie, prova dopo prova, giorno dopo giorno, fino a che il feeling non è stato perfetto.

Un trionfo che apre nuovi orizzonti, spezza alleanze solide, rimescola le carte e stravolge le gerarchie, un trionfo che ora proviamo a rivivere con le parole.

Alle 19,36 l’uscita dei nove cavalli dall’Entrone, il saluto al palco delle comparse e il lento ma inesorabile tragitto verso la mossa.

L’attesa è tutta per la busta che come da tradizione è “scesa” dal palco dei capitani per essere recapitata nelle mani del mossiere marchese Giorgio Guglielmi di Vulci.

Le Contrade sono state chiamate tra i canapi nel seguente ordine: Lupa, Valdimontone, Onda, Oca, Civetta, Nicchio, Bruco, Drago e di rincorsa la Tartuca.

Subito nervosimo tra i canapi, con la Civetta che non trova posizione e si porta spesso e volentieri a bloccare l’ingresso della rincorsa. Nella parte alta della mossa anche Bruco e Nicchio fanno fatica a mantenere l’allineamento, mentre nella zona bassa Lupa e Valdimontone hanno grande spazio.

Passano i minuti e il mossiere ordina la prima uscita dai canapi. Si ricomincia ma non cambia niente e quando Oca e Lupa forzano c’è il primo abbassamento del canape.

Ora lo spazio c’è ma la Tartuca non entra e l’attesa crea tensione anche nella parte bassa del canape, dove i cavalli di Valdimontone e Lupa iniziano a scalciare.

Guglielmi di Vulci ordina un’altra uscita e qualche istante dopo si vede costretto ad abbassare il canape per evitare rischi ai cavalli.

C’è anche una terza uscita e dopo mezz’ora di attesa finalmente si parte. Clemente getta uno sguardo dentro i canapi e poi spinge dentro Caro Amico.

Scattano bene Onda, Lupa e Oca, mentre il Drago sceglie la traiettoria interna. A San Martino Tittia è già nettamente in testa, Bighino è attardato, Vittorio va largo, mentre Sgaibarre stringe troppo e rovina sul tufo.

All’uscita dalla curva dietro l’Oca riemerge il Valdimontone, mentre in terza posizione si fa vedere il Nicchio mentre tutte le altre accoppiate sono già attardate.

Tittia è perfetto al Casato, Lo Zedde tenta di riavvicinarsi ma cade e di conseguenza il Nicchio si porta secondo.

Un solo giro e restano due Contrade a contendersi il cencio di Provenzano. L’Oca sembra non avere problemi nel gestire il vantaggio, anche se Brio sollecita Dostoevskij per accorciare il distacco.

Al terzo Casato i giochi sembrano fatti ma il Nicchio non si arrendere e stringe la traiettoria oltre ogni possibilità. Tittia resta un po’ largo e rischia l’impatto con Estremo Oriente scosso che procede al contrario. Un inconveniente che rallenta la volata di Fedora Saura, ridando speranza al Nicchio.

Negli ultimi metri l’Oca usa il nerbo per tenere dietro il grande avversario e ci riesce per una manciata di centrimetri. Fontebranda può festeggiare.

At 7:36 pm the nine horses exit from the Entrone, the greeting to the extras’ stage and the slow but inexorable journey towards the mossa.

The wait is all for the envelope that as per tradition has “descended” from the captains’ stage to be delivered into the hands of the mossiere marquis Giorgio Guglielmi di Vulci.

The Contrade have been called between the ropes in the following order: Lupa, Valdimontone, Onda, Oca, Civetta, Nicchio, Bruco, Drago and Tartuca as rincorsa.

Immediately nervousness between the ropes, with Civetta not finding a position and often and willingly blocking the entrance of the pursuit. In the upper part of the mossa even Bruco and Nicchio struggle to maintain alignment, while in the lower area Lupa and Valdimontone have plenty of space.

The minutes pass and the mossiere orders the first exit from the ropes. We start again but nothing changes and when Oca and Lupa push, the rope is lowered for the first time.

Now there is space but Tartuca does not enter and the wait creates tension even in the lower part of the rope, where the horses of Valdimontone and Lupa begin to kick.

Guglielmi di Vulci orders another exit and a few moments later he is forced to lower the rope to avoid risks to the horses.

There is also a third exit and after half an hour of waiting, finally we set off. Clemente takes a look inside the ropes and then pushes Caro Amico in.

Onda, Lupa and Oca start well, while Drago chooses the inside trajectory. At San Martino Tittia is already clearly in the lead, Bighino is delayed, Vittorio goes wide, while Sgaibarre tightens too much and crashes on the tufo.

At the exit of the curve behind Oca, Valdimontone re-emerges, while in third position Nicchio shows itself while all the other pairs are already behind.

Tittia is perfect at the Casato, Lo Zedde tries to get closer but falls and consequently Nicchio moves to second.

Just one lap and two Contrade remain to compete for Provenzano’s rag. Oca seems to have no problems in managing the advantage, even if Brio urges Dostoevskij to close the gap.

At the third Casato the game seems done but Nicchio does not give up and tightens the trajectory beyond all possibility. Tittia stays a little wide and risks the impact with the shaken Estremo Oriente that is proceeding in the opposite direction. An inconvenience that slows down the sprint of Fedora Saura, giving hope to Nicchio.

In the last meters Oca uses the nerve to keep behind the great opponent and succeeds by a handful of centimeters. Fontebranda can celebrate.

Oca vertrekt redelijk en is al aan kop in de eerste San Martino. Bij het ingaan van de tweede ronde hebben ze al enkele colonnini voorsprong op Nicchio. Achter Nicchio valt een minstens even groot gat. De koers lijkt gereden. Een ronde later is er weinig veranderd. Achter Nicchio is het gat alleen maar groter geworden. In de laatste Casato duikt echter plots de scosso van Lupa op in tegengestelde richting. Oca moet remmen en bijsturen. Hierdoor komt Nicchio dichter en dichter en…op de meet is het niet te zien wie er gewonnen heeft. Ook de commentator weet het niet. (non sapiamo, non sapiamo)

Ook op het plein was het niet in te schatten wie er nu gewonnen had. Toen de vlag van Nicchio aan het stadhuis verscheen leek het een uitgemaakte zaak. Enkele minuten later werd de vlag echter terug ingetrokken. Ze werd vervangen door die van Oca. De reeds afgehaalde en gevierde Palio werd dus ook overgegeven tussen Nicchio en Oca. Straf dat daar geen vechtpartijen,… aan te pas zijn gekomen. Alles verliep in een serene sfeer.

Tittia wint z’n eerste Palio. Ook Fedora Saura is voor het eerst succesvol op de Piazza.
