Trionfano Chochi e Brio. Smentite le previsioni che vedevano, tra le favorite, Oca, Istrice e Leocorno.

È Pantera. La Piazza ha atteso in silenzio che il mossiere Daniele Masala, ex campione olimpionico di Pentathlon, chiamasse le Contrade alla mossa. Tra i canapi Torre, Aquila, Selva, Oca, Drago, Giraffa, Leocorno, Valdimontone, Pantera con l’Istrice di rincorsa.

Dimenticati i mondiali, a Siena, migliaia di persone si sono immobilizzate. Gli occhi fissi su quei dieci fantini che montano a pelo stupendi animali, in un antico connubio di forza e destrezza.

Partono. In uno scatto fulmineo che squarcia l’aria l’Aquila è in testa, seguita da Selva, Valdimontone e Torre che, all’altezza di Fonte Gaia, rimonta andando in seconda posizione. Dietro il Leocorno.

L’Aquila sempre in testa alla prima curva di S. Martino, mentre l’Oca, dall’interno si porta in seconda posizione; quindi: Selva, Torre e Leocorno. Cadono il Valdimontone, la Torre e la Giraffa. Stesso allineamento per le prime tre Contrade anche alla successiva curva del Casato, dove cade il Leocorno.

La vittoria della Pantera si gioca tutta qui, quando si porta in terza posizione superando la Contrada di Vallepiatta. Al secondo S. Martino e al secondo Casato l’Aquila è sempre in testa inseguita dall’Oca e dalla Pantera, che al bandierino rimonta l’Oca iniziando a inseguire la rivale.

A pochi metri dall’arrivo, quando ormai il Palio sembrava dell’Aquila, il Mari con un guizzo finale entra dall’interno, capovolgendo la corsa.

Andrea Mari, detto Brio, il fantino senese ventinovenne ha alzato il nerbo in segno di vittoria. La prima della sua carriera, così come per Chochi, il baio di otto anni al suo secondo Palio. La corsa è finita. Il rione di Stalloreggi ha il suo ventiseiesimo drappellone realizzato da Rita Rossella Ciani e Pia Bianciardi Venturini e dedicato, a seicento anni dalla nascita, a Sano di Pietro.

Questo fantastico carosello, sempre identico a se stesso e sempre diverso, ha scritto un’altra pagina di storia.

Il cencio è già nella Chiesa di Provenzano per il Te Deum di ringraziamento. Tra le lacrime di gioia le lancette del tempo ripartono. Il drappo, desiderato, agognato e sognato è loro.

I figuranti, che pochi minuti primi hanno ricordato le gesta e la gloria di Siena, hanno smesso i preziosi costumi. Sulla Piazza, mentre il tufo si raffredda, carte e lattine: i resti di una fetta di umanità venuta qui per calarsi in un passato che solo i senesi vivono nel quotidiano.

Nell’aria ancora il rullo dei tamburi e il fruscio secco della seta delle bandiere, come vessilli. I vincitori hanno lasciato il campo. Vi ritorneranno più tardi, dopo aver superato lo stordimento, l’emozione forte, dopo che il cuore ha ripreso il suo ritmo e l’adrenalina è diminuita.

Per gli altri è subito sera.

Niente di nuovo e tutto diverso. È Siena. È il Palio di Siena e nessuna cronaca, neppure la più dettagliata, riuscirà mai a raccontarlo in tutta la sua essenza e, soprattutto, nella sua autenticità. Parole e lettere relegate ad un ruolo troppo limitato per riuscire a decifrare un codice fatto di emozioni. Sensazioni a pelle che riescono a contagiare anche lo straniero, catapultato per caso o per curiosità in una città dove i colori, gli odori ed i suoni, come mai in nessun altro luogo, fanno da scenografia alla vita.

It’s Pantera. The Piazza waited in silence for the starter Daniele Masala, former Olympic Pentathlon champion, to call the Contrade to the mossa. Among the ropes Torre, Aquila, Selva, Oca, Drago, Giraffa, Leocorno, Valdimontone, Pantera with Istrice as rincorsa.

The world championships forgotten, in Siena, thousands of people froze. Their eyes fixed on those ten jockeys who bareback mount the magnificent animals, in an ancient combination of strength and skill.

They set off. In a lightning-fast sprint that tears through the air, Aquila is in the lead, followed by Selva, Valdimontone and Torre who, at the height of Fonte Gaia, comes back to take second place. Behind Leocorno.

Aquila always in the lead at the first bend of S. Martino, while Oca, from the inside, moves into second position; then: Selva, Torre and Leocorno. Valdimontone, Torre and Giraffa fall. Same alignment for the first three Contrade also at the next bend of the Casato, where Leocorno falls.

The victory of Pantera is played out here, when it moves into third position by overtaking the Contrada of Vallepiatta. At the second S. Martino and the second Casato Aquila is always in the lead followed by Oca and Pantera, who at the flag overtakes Oca starting to chase the rival.

A few meters from the finish, when the Palio seemed to be of Aquila, Mari with a final dart enters from the inside, turning the race upside down.

Andrea Mari, known as Brio, the twenty-nine year old jockey from Siena raised his whip in a sign of victory. The first of his career, as well as for Choci, the eight-year-old bay at his second Palio. The race is over. The district of Stalloreggi has its twenty-sixth banner created by Rita Rossella Ciani and Pia Bianciardi Venturini and dedicated, six hundred years after his birth, to Sano di Pietro.

This fantastic carousel, always identical to itself and always different, has written another page of history.

The rag is already in the Church of Provenzano for the Te Deum of thanksgiving. Between tears of joy the hands of time start again. The banner, desired, longed for and dreamed of is theirs.

The participants, who a few minutes earlier recalled the deeds and glory of Siena, have taken off their precious costumes. In the Piazza, while the tuff cools, papers and cans: the remains of a slice of humanity that came here to immerse itself in a past that only the Sienese live in everyday life.

The air still contains the roll of drums and the dry rustle of the silk of the flags, like banners. The winners have left the field. They will return later, after overcoming the shock, the strong emotion, after the heart has regained its rhythm and the adrenaline has decreased.

For the others it is immediately evening.

Nothing new and everything is different. It is Siena. It is the Palio di Siena and no chronicle, not even the most detailed, will ever be able to tell it in all its essence and, above all, in its authenticity. Words and letters relegated to a role too limited to be able to decipher a code made of emotions. Sensations on the skin that can infect even the foreigner, catapulted by chance or out of curiosity into a city where the colors, the smells and the sounds, like never before in any other place, act as a backdrop to life.

Choci en Brio verrassen alle experten die Oca, Istrice en Leocorno naar voren schoven als favorieten. Mossiere Masala roept de 10 wijken in volgende volgorde binnen : Torre, Aquila, Selva, Oca, Drago, Giraffa, Leocorno, Valdimontone, Pantera en Istrice die de start mogen geven.

Aquila start als eerste, gevold door Selva, Valdimontone en Torre. Daarachter zit Leocorno. In de eerste San Martino pakt Oca de binnenkant. Ze worden tweede na Aquila. Selva, Torre en Leocorno volgen. Valdimontone, Torre en Giraffa komen ten val.

In de Casato komt ook Leocorno ten val. In de achtergrond maakt Pantera plaatsen goed. Hij gaat Selva voorbij en wordt derde na Aquila en Oca.

Bij de 2e passage aan de start gaan ze ook Oca voorbij. Enkel rivaal Aquila is nog voor hen, met grote voorsprong.

Zienderogen zie je Pantera dichterbij komen, maar de afstand lijkt onmogelijk te overbruggen. Brio neemt alle risico’s in de bochten. Een paar meter voor de finish passeert hij Aquila en wint hij een onmogelijke Palio! Zowel voor Choci als voor Brio is het de eerste overwinning.
