Dopo una prima mossa annullata, alla seconda schizzano via Chiocciola, Pantera, Civetta e Leocorno che invece di tentare il sorpasso sulla rivale prende a nerbarla decisamente.

Al primo San Martino va in testa la Pantera seguita dalla Chiocciola e dalla Selva in rimonta, poi Drago, Nicchio e tutte le altre.

La Selva ha un altro passo e all’inizio del secondo giro si libera della Chiocciola e raggiunge la Pantera.

Poco prima del secondo San Martino la svolta: la Pantera cala vistosamente e nel tentativo di frenare la Chiocciola, che prova a passarla all’esterno, lascia libero il varco basso alla Selva che s’infila e va a prendere la testa.

Non c’è più storia il Palio prende la via di Vallepiatta con un sorprendente Sgaibarre che non sbaglierà nulla fino alla fine.

After a first move that is cancelled, at the second Chiocciola, Pantera, Civetta and Leocorno take off and instead of trying to overtake their rival they start to slap her decisively.

At the first San Martino Pantera takes the lead followed by Chiocciola and Selva in recovery, then Drago, Nicchio and all the others.

Selva has a different pace and at the beginning of the second lap it frees itself from Chiocciola and reaches Pantera.

Just before the second San Martino the turning point: Pantera drops noticeably and in an attempt to slow down Chiocciola, who tries to pass it on the outside, leaves the low gap free for Selva who slips in and goes to take the lead.

There is no more history the Palio takes the road to Vallepiatta with a surprising Sgaibarre who will not make a single mistake until the end.

Nog voor de aanvang van de koers is Siena in de ban van de nieuwe mossiere Norberto Capozella. Er is veel kritiek, het ontbreekt hem aan gezag waardoor elke oefenrit een warboel was.

Vier favorieten aan de start : Civetta (Berio), Drago (Ugo Sancez), Leocorno (Urban II) en Selva (Zodiach) hebben een ex-winnaar geloot.

Het lot brengt de wijken als volgt tussen de touwen : Chiocciola, Nicchio, Pantera, Civetta, Drago, Giraffa, Aquila, Leocorno, Tartuca en Selva als tiende.

Nadat de starter de wijken tot 3 maal toe opnieuw binnenroept, volgt een discutabele valse start. Enkele minuten later komt Sgaibarre opnieuw binnen. Tartuca, die negende staat; staat volledig omgedraaid. Een logische valse start blijft uit. Einde koers voor Tartuca en wellicht ook einde verhaal voor starter Capozella.

Chiocciola, Civetta, Pantera, Leocorno en Drago vertrekken het best. In de eerste San Martino leidt Pantera, gevolgd door Chiocciola en dan Selva die een meesterlijke eerste San Martino draait. Nicchio, Drago en Civetta klampen aan. De rest lijkt dan al uitgeteld.

Weinig verandering in de Casato, Selva maakt wel terrein goed! In de tweede San Martino draait Selva weer via de binnenkant. Chiocciola draait zo breed dat ze recht de matrassen inrijden. Selva, enkel gevolgd door Pantera rijdt comfortabel aan de leiding. De overwinning ligt binnen handbereik.

Debutant Sgaibarre wint de palio op knappe wijze en brengt de drappellone na drie jaar weer naar Selva.
