La litania delle prove, sempre più disarmanti nella loro dinamica, con poco spazio per un reale addestramento al tufo – salvo la partenza – nonostante i cavalli nuovi, vede soprattutto crescere la preoccupazione per i calci di Alcnachito, che costringe all’esonero il Nicchio alla terza prova, dopo un contatto tra i canapi (esenzione confermata anche alla quarta prova) e la Tartuca per la provaccia.

Buoni gli spunti dai canapi offerti da Drago e Aquila (prima prova), Torre e Giraffa (seconda), Torre e Aquila (terza), Aquila e Tartuca (quarta), Nicchio e Civetta (prova generale), Aquila e Civetta (provaccia). Le vittorie delle prove vanno registrate per Leocorno, Drago, Leocorno, Leocorno, Nicchio e Aquila.

Si va al Palio con qualche considerazione in più per la Civetta e il Drago, la conferma dell’Aquila come favoritissima, e ben pochi altri riferimenti tattici, se non la solita ascesa «diplomatica» della Torre. E in più, su tutto il quadro, pesa la paura per la ritrosia di Alcnachito a stare tra i canapi: evitarne le coppiole, diventerà la prima missione per tutti i fantini alla mossa.

C’è un attimo, incredibile, prima della carriera, quando i dieci cavalli camminano lievi in attesa di entrare tra i canapi, che fa capire davvero che cosa sia il silenzio. E’ l’attimo che pare durare una vita, in cui la Piazza attende la busta con l’ordine di ingresso. E’ un silenzio profondo, gravido di speranze, infarcito di preghiere e scaramanzia: la musica dell’attesa, che è sempre accompagnata dalla speranza, è quella che si sente in quel momento in Piazza del Campo.

La busta arriva. Il mossiere e tutti i Contradaioli, si augurano che la Selva vada di rincorsa. Ma non sarà così: la minaccia dei calci di Alcnachito incomberà sulla mossa. Eccolo l’ordine di ingresso tanto atteso: Leocorno, Giraffa, Torre, Chiocciola, Aquila, Civetta, Selva, Nicchio, Tartuca e il Drago di rincorsa. Iniziano i giochi tattici, la Piazza aspetta.

Quali sono le dinamiche della mossa? La variabile impazzita è senz’altro Alcnachito e infatti nel corso dei lunghi minuti di attesa, per due volte Zullina viene raggiunta dalle coppiole del cavallo della Selva. C’è grande problema in basso, nei canapi, dove la Torre non riesce a far pesare la sua potenza diplomatica ed è spesso pressata, anche perché tutte le contrade a valle della Selva, tendono a star ben lontane per evitare colpi proibiti. Ed è questo, al di là di tattiche, salve e partiti, l’elemento chiave della mossa di luglio.

Quando il Drago decide di entrare, c’è un grande affollamento di sette contrade verso il basso, mentre l’ottava, il Nicchio, nella parte «centro-settentrionale» del canape, ha il vuoto intorno a sé. Giraffa e Leocorno riescono ad approfittare al meglio del bonus della parte bassa della pista e partono in testa, ma alle loro spalle, c’è il Nicchio, con il Colagè che ripete la manovra di abbassamento della traiettoria che già nel 1998 gli consentì di vincere proprio nel Nicchio. Seguono Drago, Torre, Chiocciola, Tartuca e Aquila, mentre molto più lontano, penalizzate dalla mossa, sono Selva e Civetta.

Alla mossa già si delinea la strategia del Nicchio: mentre il Bruschelli riesce a vincere il testa a testa con il Leocorno per girare primo a San Martino, il Bufera cerca quel «viottolo» che è proprio sul confine della logica: tanto basso da recuperare metri agli avversari davanti, tagliando la curva, ma non così da finire sul colonnino. La manovra riesce alla perfezione: a metà dei materassi di San Martino, il Nicchio è primo, seguito dal Leocorno e dalla Giraffa. Gli altri sembrano già tagliati fuori. Nella spianata prima del Casato il Nicchio guadagna metri su metri e il primo Casato vede la mai considerata accoppiata Zullina-Bufera, assolutamente in testa. Dietro, Velluto tenta una manovra ad alto rischio per recuperare: stringe la traiettoria della curva riuscendo a passare il Leocorno, finendo anche per allargarlo fino a sbattere nei palchi.

Trecciolino vola in collo agli spettatori in palco, mentre Velluto per un attimo si volta a guardare gli effetti della propria manovra. Ugo Sancez rallenta anche la Chiocciola e la Tartuca, che così, ormai lontane dalla possibilità di vincere, ingaggiano un duello a suon di nerbate che almeno mette un po’ di sale nella loro Carriera.

Davanti il Nicchio è lontano, inarrivabile. Dario Colagè respira, si volta indietro a guardare e vede solo tanto tufo fra lui e la Giraffa: imposta una traiettoria dolce a San Martino, fa rifiatare Zullina, che pare tranquilla, sicura della propria insospettata forza. La sua andatura è quasi da prova, tanto è il vantaggio.

Mentre imposta il secondo Casato, Bufera opta ancora per una curva senza stress: non ce n’è proprio bisogno. Ma proprio all’apice della salita, a curva ormai praticamente conclusa, Zullina abbassa la testa. L’anteriore destro non risponde più, il barbero non può galoppare. Il ritmo della grande sfida si placa inesorabilmente: il cuore di Bufera batte più forte. E’ un attimo: la sensazione della vittoria imminente non c’è più, sostituita dallo sconforto del dolore per un sogno che si perde per un guizzo del destino avverso. Un infortunio del cavallo e il Palio del Nicchio è finito. Mentre quelli che erano stati i dominatori escono di scena, rallentando come un’auto di formula 1 che deve fermarsi ai box, la Giraffa prende la testa all’inizio dell’ultimo giro. E il Palio, da passerella solitaria per un solo protagonista, si trasforma in duello a tre: Velluto è infatti incalzato dal barbero scosso del Leocorno, mentre Cianchino recupera metro su metro, portando la Civetta a ridosso del duo di testa.

La Giraffa, pressata da Ugo Sancez, non riesce a tenere traiettorie strette, mentre la Civetta fa un ultimo giro da capolavoro. Ecco il Casato: Giraffa ancora prima, il Leocorno più basso e la Civetta subito dietro. Ugo Sancez non cede, si impegna, mostra la potenza dei suoi muscoli, mentre Attilax è stanco e Alanis sembra avere la forza del vento.

Eccoli nella volata finale, come centometristi che cercano il record. A cinque metri dal bandierino, la Giraffa cede e Velluto urla la sua rabbia mentre si rende conto della sconfitta. Più in basso nella pista, vicino agli steccati, Cianchino nerba per l’ultima volta Alanis e spera nel guizzo estremo del suo cavallo. Ma Ugo Sancez non molla, rende vana la rimonta della Civetta.

Vince il Leocorno. Due successi in poco più di dieci mesi: una magia, una striscia di gloria che capitan Marco Gualtieri (con i tenenti Marco Andreini e Bruno Mazzuoli) e il priore Lorenzo Sampieri, condividono con il proprio popolo. E con quel Contradaiolo particolare, Alfredo Mandarini, capitano tre volte vittorioso, che stavolta ha «solo» portato Ugo Sancez nella stalla del Leco.

Lontana dalle luci della ribalta, Zullina, il cavallo che per due giri aveva dominato, torna nella stalla del Nicchio. Bufera piange, mentre il cavallo viene fasciato. Arriva il van del Comune e mentre nel rione vicino si sente il tam-tam della vittoria, il barbero viene trasportato alla clinica veterinaria. Già si sa che il cavallo si salverà: l’infortunio non è grave. Ma è stato decisivo per spostare gli equilibri del Palio del 2 luglio 2001.

The litany of tests, increasingly disarming in their dynamics, with little room for real training on the tuff – except for the start – despite the new horses, sees above all growing concern for the kicks of Alcnachito, who forces Nicchio to be exonerated in the third test, after a contact between the ropes (exemption also confirmed in the fourth test) and Tartuca for the trial.

And in addition, the fear for Alcnachito’s reluctance to stay between the ropes weighs on the whole picture: avoiding the pairs will become the first mission for all the jockeys at the start.

There is an incredible moment, before the career, when the ten horses walk lightly waiting to enter between the ropes, which really makes you understand what silence is. It is the moment that seems to last a lifetime, in which the Piazza awaits the envelope with the entry order. It is a deep silence, pregnant with hopes, stuffed with prayers and superstition: the music of waiting, which is always accompanied by hope, is what you hear at that moment in Piazza del Campo.

The envelope arrives. The starter and all the Contradaioli hope that Selva will be rincorsa. But it won’t be like that: the threat of Alcnachito’s kicks will loom over the move. Here is the long-awaited entry order: Leocorno, Giraffa, Torre, Chiocciola, Aquila, Civetta, Selva, Nicchio, Tartuca and Drago as rincorsa. The tactical games begin, the Piazza waits.

What are the dynamics of the move? The wild variable is undoubtedly Alcnachito and in fact during the long minutes of waiting, Zullina is reached twice by the pairs of Selva’s horse. There is a big problem down below, in the ropes, where Torre is unable to make its diplomatic power count and is often pressured, also because all the districts downstream from Selva tend to stay well away to avoid illegal shots. And this is, beyond tactics, salvos and parties, the key element of the July move.

When Drago decides to enter, there is a large crowding of seven districts towards the bottom, while the eighth, Nicchio, in the “central-northern” part of the hem, has emptiness around it. Giraffa and Leocorno manage to make the most of the bonus of the lower part of the track and start in the lead, but behind them, there is Nicchio, with Colagè repeating the maneuver of lowering the trajectory that already in 1998 allowed him to win in Nicchio. Drago, Torre, Chiocciola, Tartuca and Aquila follow, while much further away, penalized by the move, are Selva and Civetta.

At the move, Nicchio’s strategy is already taking shape: while Bruschelli manages to win the head-to-head with Leocorno to turn first at San Martino, Bufera looks for that “path” that is right on the edge of logic: low enough to recover meters from the opponents in front, cutting the curve, but not so low as to end up on the column. The maneuver works perfectly: halfway through the San Martino mattresses, Nicchio is first, followed by Leocorno and Giraffa. The others seem already cut off. In the clearing before the Casato, Nicchio gains meters after meters and the first Casato sees the never considered pairing Zullina-Bufera, absolutely in the lead. Behind, Velluto attempts a high-risk maneuver to recover: he tightens the trajectory of the curve managing to pass Leocorno, also ending up widening it until it crashes into the boxes.

Trecciolino flies into the arms of the spectators in the box, while Velluto turns for a moment to look at the effects of his maneuver. Ugo Sancez also slows down Chiocciola and Tartuca, who thus, now far from the possibility of winning, engage in a duel with blows that at least puts a little salt in their Career.

In front, Nicchio is far away, unreachable. Dario Colagè breathes, turns back to look and sees only a lot of tuff between him and Giraffa: he sets a gentle trajectory to San Martino, lets Zullina catch her breath, who seems calm, sure of her unexpected strength. Her pace is almost a test, such is the advantage.

While setting the second Casato, Bufera still opts for a stress-free curve: there is no need. But right at the top of the climb, with the curve practically over, Zullina lowers her head. The right front no longer responds, the barbero cannot gallop. The pace of the great challenge calms down inexorably: Bufera’s heart beats faster. It’s a moment: the feeling of imminent victory is no longer there, replaced by the despair of pain for a dream that is lost due to a twist of adverse fate. An injury to the horse and the Palio del Nicchio is over. While those who had been the dominators exit the scene, slowing down like a Formula 1 car that has to stop in the pits, Giraffa takes the lead at the start of the last lap. And the Palio, from a solitary catwalk for a single protagonist, turns into a three-way duel: Velluto is in fact pressed by the shaken barbero of Leocorno, while Cianchino recovers meter after meter, bringing Civetta close to the leading duo.

Giraffa, pressed by Ugo Sancez, is unable to keep tight trajectories, while Civetta makes a masterpiece of a final lap. Here is the Casato: Giraffa still first, Leocorno lower and Civetta immediately behind. Ugo Sancez does not give up, he commits himself, shows the power of his muscles, while Attilax is tired and Alanis seems to have the strength of the wind.

Here they are in the final sprint, like sprinters looking for the record. Five meters from the flag, Giraffa gives in and Velluto screams his anger as he realizes his defeat. Further down the track, near the fences, Cianchino whips Alanis for the last time and hopes for the final dart of his horse. But Ugo Sancez doesn’t give up, he makes the Civetta’s comeback vain.

Leocorno wins. Two successes in just over ten months: a magic, a streak of glory that captain Marco Gualtieri (with lieutenants Marco Andreini and Bruno Mazzuoli) and the prior Lorenzo Sampieri, share with their people. And with that particular Contradaiolo, Alfredo Mandarini, three-time victorious captain, who this time “only” took Ugo Sancez to the Leco stable.

Far from the limelight, Zullina, the horse that had dominated for two laps, returns to Nicchio stable. Bufera cries, while the horse is bandaged. The van of the Municipality arrives and while in the nearby district the tom-tom of victory can be heard, the Barbero is transported to the veterinary clinic. It is already known that the horse will survive: the injury is not serious. But it was decisive in shifting the balance of the Palio of July 2, 2001.

Alcnachito, het paard van Selva is onhandelbaar en stampt naar alles wat in de buurt komt. Wanneer Drago dan toch besluit om binnen te komen starten Giraffa, Leocorno en Nicchio als eersten. De eerste twee draaien heel breed waardoor Nicchio de leiding pakt na de eerste San Martino.

In de eerste Casato botst Trecciolino op debutant Ugo Sancez tegen de ballustrade en komt hij ten val. Nicchio domineert en blijft aan kop. In de tweede Casato blesseert Zullina zich echter en Nicchio stopt uit voorzorg.

Giraffa pakt de kop over en leidt. In de laatste Casato draait de scosso van Leocorno echter het kortste. Hij neemt de leiding en houdt stand. Civetta tracht nog een allerlaatste inhaalmaneuver te doen maar strandt op de verschrikkelijke tweede plaats.

Leocorno wint na de Palio van augustus 2000 opnieuw. Ze winnen dus 2 reguliere palio’s op rij.
